Overview

The earliest known robust australopith, best represented by the "Black Skull" (KNM-WT 17000) from West Turkana, Kenya. Possessed a massive sagittal crest for anchoring enormous jaw muscles, a very prognathic face, and small brain. Likely the ancestor of later Paranthropus species, representing the initial divergence of the robust lineage from the gracile australopiths.
