Overview

The bonobo or pygmy chimpanzee, the other closest living relative of humans. Diverged from common chimpanzees approximately 2 MYA. Notable for a more gracile build, matriarchal social structure, prominent use of sexual behavior for social bonding, and relatively less aggressive intergroup interactions compared to common chimpanzees. Provides an important alternative model for the social behavior of the last common ancestor.
