Overview

A debated hominin taxon based on a partial calvaria discovered in 1994 near Ceprano, Italy. Originally dated to ~800 kya, subsequent work revised the age to ~400-350 kya. The skull cap is thick-boned with a low vault, prominent supraorbital torus, and an estimated cranial capacity of ~1,165 cc. Morphologically it shows a mosaic of H. erectus-like and H. heidelbergensis-like features. Some researchers assign it to H. heidelbergensis, others consider it a late H. erectus, and the original describers proposed it as a distinct species. Its taxonomic status remains actively debated.

Brain Anatomy

Endocast-Based Estimates

Brain region sizes are estimated from endocasts (internal skull casts), not direct brain observation. These are approximations with inherent uncertainty.
